  1.    SOME IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES IN VERSION 1.5:
  2.  
  3.    Hot New Menus!  Executive Host gets a facelift, including new sysop,
  4.    guest, and protocol menus.  These menus are still encoded and will be
  5.    displayed to callers unless the SysOp creates his own custom menus.
  6.    Remember that the Host looks for custom menus first, so if you still
  7.    have old menu files in your directory, the Host will not display the
  8.    new ones until the old ones are moved.
  9.  
  10.    New SysOp keys: (F9 and F10)
  11.  
  12.    Two new Function keys options were added to the Host that may be used
  13.    while a caller is online.
  14.  
  15.    The (F9) key toggles the Page switch on/off.
  16.    If switched on, the caller will be able to page the SysOp for chat.
  17.    If switched off, the caller will be instructed to leave a message.
  18.  
  19.    The (F10) key displays a full-screen help message for the SysOp.  The
  20.    caller is unaware of the help screen and is not interfered with.
  21.  
  22.    Improved the (t)ag file feature.  File listing and tagging were improved
  23.    through the addition of (h)elp and (c)ontinuous commands to go along
  24.    with the (t)ag and (e)rase commands.  Also, callers are now taken
  25.    directly to the protocol menu if they have tagged files for download.
  26.  
  27.    Replies added to message base.  A caller can now make a direct reply to
  28.    a message immediately after reading it.  The message is automatically
  29.    directed to the sender of the original message.
  30.  
  31.    Logon.bat file may now be used to run an external program or door upon
  32.    a caller logging on to the system.  This feature is available for
  33.    registered users only.
  34.  
  35.    Logoff.bat file may now be used to run an external program after a
  36.    caller logs off of the system.  This feature is also available for
  37.    registered users only.
  38.  
  39.    Logon and Logong text files will be displayed to callers if found in
  40.    the Host directory.  They are displayed immediately after the news file,
  41.    and may be used for "last on" or "what happened today" bulletins.

  43.    Now when a caller selects "/p" for private upload, the description
  44.    and file information is written to the file PRIVATE.DIR.
  45.  
  46.    The message base colors were again modified and improved.  I think we
  47.    have found the ultimate combination this time... but you never know.

  49.    More internal support was added for the HST and other high-speed modems.

  51.    The download time for each file is now calculated correctly when using
  52.    high-speed modems with locked baud rates.
  53.  
  54.    More internal security was added to ensure continued system safety.

  56.    Fixed a bug with the NEW.DIR file not being updated properly when
  57.    a caller uploaded a file.

  59.    Fixed a bug with the View Guest List option.  A lock-up could be
  60.    caused if only 5 users were registered.

  64.    The "EDIT" Guest List option was taken off of the main menu and added
  65.    to the (UTIL)ities option.  "EDIT" may still be typed from the main
  66.    menu to take you directly to the Guest List Editor.

  68.    REMINDER:  Although the (S)hell command was also added to the "UTIL"
  69.    option, it may also be used directly from the main menu to speed up
  70.    access to DOS.  Also, don't forget the quick logon options that
  71.    were added in version 1.3.  The following options may be used to speed
  72.    up access to the system from local or remote logon.

  74.    Do you want ANSI graphics? -> y q x
  75.  
  76.    "q" means quick access and tells the host to skip the opening screen and
  77.        the news file.
  78.    "x" means turn xpert mode on.  The Host will immediately go to xpert mode,
  79.        and the menus will not be displayed upon logon.

  81.    These commands may be in any order, any case, and spaces are ignored.

  84.    SOME IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES IN VERSION 1.4:

  86.    File tagging is Here!
  87.       Thanks to popular demand, file tagging into a download batch queue has
  88.    been added to the Host.  Up to 5 files may be tagged for download while
  89.    the caller is viewing filelists.  The (T)ag function will add files to
  90.    the download queue while checking for the existence of the file, and
  91.    ensuring that the caller has sufficient time to download the file.  The
  92.    list may also be cleared with the (c)lear list function.  Both of these
  93.    functions are available while viewing filelists.  Download batches of more
  94.    than 5 files will be available as soon as Colin releases version 4.0 of
  95.    Telix.  A fundamental change in the Telix code is required to allow a
  96.    larger batch.
  97.  
  98.      To better serve the new tag file feature, I have also added a new batch
  99.    process that will allow callers without the use of batch protocols to
  100.    tag multiple files and download them with a "batch process".  For example,
  101.    a caller who is not using Telix and has no batch protocols (poor soul),
  102.    could tag up to 5 files, and then choose "D" to download.  Executive Host
  103.    would then send each file, one at a time, until all files have been sent.
  104.    The caller is asked if he/she wishes to continue the batch download,
  105.    between each file transfer.  This in effect allows a caller to download
  106.    up to 5 files without having to remember what they are.
  107.  
  108.    More Security:
  109.      Callers are required to reenter their password upon coming out of any
  110.    DOS shell activity.  Password verification is performed when a caller
  111.    returns from a door, and when the SysOp returns from a DOS shell.  This
  112.    feature adds more security by eliminating the possibility of a
  113.    simultaneous disconnect/reconnect while a caller is in DOS.  If the caller
  114.    fails to enter the correct password, the caller is disconnected and the
  115.    Host will recycle.
  116.    
  117.    The View Zip file function was slightly improved to give the proper
  118.    message when a file could not be located.
  119.  
  120.    The Verify Dir File option was fixed.  Some files that actually existed
  121.    were being reported as missing.

  124.    SOME IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES IN VERSION 1.3:

  126.     NEW HOST SECURITY LEVELS:
  127.     The Host secutity levels were slightly modified in version 1.3.
  128.     The new levels are described below.
  129.  
  130.     Level 0 - Caller is "locked-out" of the Host and will have no access.
  131.     Level 1 - Callers may read mail, view bulletins and info screen, page
  132.               the SysOp, or leave a private message to the SysOp.
  133.     Level 2 - Same as 1, but may also view file directories and perform a
  134.               text search on directories.
  135.     Level 3 - Same as 2, but may also enter public messages and upload files.
  136.     Level 4 - Same as 3, but has access to doors and may view files.
  137.     Level 5 - Caller has full guest privilges including the ability to
  138.     download files.
  139.     Level 6 - Same as 5, but no time limit is imposed on caller.
  140.     Level 7 - Not used (same as 6).
  141.     Level 8 - Not used (same as 6).
  142.     Level 9 - SysOp status.  Caller has full access to all SysOp
  143.     functions.

  145.    Callers with access levels below level 3 now have the ability to leave
  146.    a private message to the SysOp.
  147.  
  148.    Slight modifications were made to the message entry code in order to allow
  149.    the entry of extended ascii characters.  This allows the entry of border
  150.    characters, and also permits users to enter messages with letters such as
  151.    ä, ü, è, etc., which are common in the european languages.

  153.    More color was added and other minor improvements and fixes were made to
  154.    the public message base.
  155.  
  156.    Trailing spaces are now stripped out of caller's name in order to make
  157.    the Host more strict during name/password entry.
  158.  
  159.    Caller's time left is now calculated from the door menu, eliminating the
  160.    possibility of callers being allowed to stay on too long.  Also, the time
  161.    of day, and time left is now displayed at the door menu prompt.

  163.    Some problems arising out of more than 100 registered callers were fixed.

  165.    Added a new option for callers to auto-logoff after their download is
  166.    complete.  Logoff is performed only if transfer is successful.

  168.    A new option was added to the configuration of Executive Host.  The event
  169.    time may now be set to any time of day the SysOp prefers.  This new option
  170.    may be also used in order to shut down the host at a certain time.  For
  171.    example, if you wanted the Host to shut-down at 6:00am, you could set your
  172.    event to run at 6:00am, and make the last line of your event read:
  173.    ECHO ~~~+++~~~ATS0=0 > COM1       ( OR WHICHEVER PORT YOU ARE USING )
  174.    This would tell your modem to no longer answer the phone, effectively
  175.    turning off the host.

  177.    One more new option added to the configuration of Executive Host.  This one
  178.    allows the Operator to "Lock" baud rates; useful with high-speed modems.
  179.    When this option is turned on, the Host will lock the communications
  180.    rate to the default protocol set in Telix.
  181.  
  182.    The (C)hange Colors option was removed from the SysOp menu and substituted
  183.    with the (C)olor on/off option.  This function was only taking up code
  184.    space, and was never being used by most SysOp's.  Custom color capabilities
  185.    will probably be available again in version 2.0, and will most likely be
  186.    added to the configuration options of the Host.

  188.    CHANGES IN VERSION 1.2
  189.  
  190.    The Host now supports multiple download directories!  The SysOp may
  191.    now create subdirectories off of the "Main" file directory and place
  192.    files in them.  Executive Host will auto-detect these new subdirectories
  193.    and search them for downloading.  Files in these subdirectories will also
  194.    be available for view by callers, and will be checked for duplicates
  195.    when a caller attempts an upload.  One Example set-up is as follows:

  216.    Files in these subdirectories will be available for View and Download by
  217.    all callers with download priveleges (access level 4 and above).
  218.    These subdirectories will also be searched for duplicates when a caller
  219.    attempts an upload.
  220.    No further set-up on your part is required, other that making these
  221.    directories and placing files in them.
  222.  
  223.    The limit on subdirectories is approximately 100, depending on the length
  224.    of each directory name.  This new feature gives the Executive Host SysOp
  225.    more power and flexibility in designing and maintaining the file base.
  226.    Note that this feature now makes the Host CD-ROM compatible.  For
  227.    example, if you had a CD-ROM player configured as your D drive, you
  228.    could set your "Main" download directory as "D:\" (the root directory).
  229.    This would mean that all of the files in subdirectories off of the root
  230.    directory will be available for callers.  However, a few CD-ROM disks are
  231.    designed with subdirectories several layers deep.  In this case, only the
  232.    subdirectories that branch directly off of the root will be available for
  233.    callers.

  235.    Downloads are now checked against the caller's time remaining to ensure
  236.    that the caller does not over-extend his\her time limit.
  237.  
  238.    The deletion of public messages is now allowed.  Callers may delete
  239.    messages written to them and also messages written by them. The SysOp may
  240.    delete any public message.
  241.  
  242.    A message base "packer" is now included with Executive Host.  This program
  243.    strips out deleted messages from the MESSAGE.TXT file in order to
  244.    reduce the size of this file, and to speed up the operation of the Host.
  245.    The program is called PACK.EXE and comes with it's own docs (PACK.DOC).
  246.  
  247.    Descriptions of private uploads are now added to a file called private.dir.
  248.  
  249.    The Host Filer was fixed so that it would use the "Main.dir" file for
  250.    certain functions if the SysOp was not using multiple description files.

  252.    Callers are now returned to the doorlist menu instead of the main menu
  253.    when coming out of a door.  This feature was added by popular demand.

  255.    Callers may stack door numbers when using the O)pen door option from the
  256.    main menu - for example entering "O 2" will open door #2.

  258.    A problem with the recording of callers' daily time has been fixed.

  260.    Several other minor bugs and problems have been fixed.

  262.    CHANGES IN VERSION 1.1
  263.  
  264.    The new sortit.bat file is correct and contains no non-standard DOS
  265.    commands.

  267.    The Sort Dir Option in the Host Filer now executes the necessary command.

  269.    The Verify Dir File Option has been modified so that it now finds all
  270.    files correctly (if they exist).

  272.    The Host no longer keeps the phone off-hook after returning from Utility
  273.    and Filer screens, and when coming out of local mode.

  275.    SysOp may now choose "0" in the time limit configuration to give callers
  276.    unlimited access time (Callers were being logged off immediately).

  278.    The files "doorlist.g" and "bulllist.g" may now be used as ansi color

  281.    Color versions of bulletins (with the letter g added to the end) now are

  284.    The dorinfo1.def file is created correctly if using com2 or in local mode.

  291.    option is available from the main menu (text search).

  296.    Version 1.1 uses a slightly different message base format.  Therefore, it
  297.    will not run properly with a message base and execmail.dat file created
  298.    by version 1.0.

  300.    If you do not want to lose your existing message base, there is a way
  301.    that you can modify the key files to work with the new version.  To
  302.    accomplish this, follow the instructions below.

  304.    1.  Edit the EXECMAIL.DAT file with your text editor, and change the
  305.    following example file as shown.

  336.    Now the conversion is complete!  Of course another way to convert is
  337.    simply delete ALL of your old version data files, including the user file
  338.    EXECHOST.USR and re-install the Host, but this I will leave up to you.
  339.    Keep in mind that if you choose this option, you will have to add all of
  340.    your caller's names back into the new user file (accomplished with the
  341.    "EDIT" guest list option), and therefore should print out your old user
  342.    file before deleting it.
  343.        If you decide to convert your old message base, your old user file
  344.    is compatible with version 1.1, but if you delete the message base
  345.    (along with EXECMAIL.DAT), you will have to delete the user file also,
  346.    since the data numbers will not match up otherwise.
